The First Soundtrack Idea

'Another Creepy Song' I found on the internet I thought this would fit really well in the background as the base sound of the voice overs which would be then be layered on over the top.
This would add depth to sound and mean that at the same time there would be both diagetic and non-diagetic.
The only thing that I have found wrong with the music and would mean that it would make the music hard to use is at 1:44 the sound becomes far louder than previously in the sound clip. This could be easily fixed as al I would have to do is reduce the sound and enhance the voices which I would then overlay.

Names

These are a few ideas of names that we thought could work for the film we are planning to produce.
In the picture you can see we chose 'Silent Minds.' This is because throughout the opening the main character does not have a voice and does not speak however is over powered and surrounded in demanding voices that shout at her and thus seems most relevant to the story line and appropriate for the genre.

Mise en Scene - In the opening

What the mise en scene will involve.
  • White dress to show purity
  • Dark room with just a single light shining on the character.
  • Hair Brush
  • In a shower
  • Make up (mascara)
  • Cigarette
  • Nail Varnish

Final Piece Ideas

After collating all our initial ideas this is what we have decided to do in our final production;
  • Woman with her eyes closed running throughout the whole opening.
  • Small clips running along side the long clip.
  • The small clips involvve normal acts e.g. washing, brushing her hair and doing make up.
  • The long post will be in a dark room.
  • Lots of voices mixed together and over lapping. Becoming louder and louder.
This is the basis of the opening.

The Prestige - By Chloe Fielder

The first thing that is put on the screen within the opening of Prestige is an eerie, fog-covered field, which has been scattered with top hats. This is hard for the viewer to see at first and makes the eyestrain adding to the mysterious allusion that is being created continuously.

There is also now sound at all in the shot once again building the anticipation of what it is we may see next and thus building enigmas that the audience are desperate to find answers for... Whose hats are those? Why is high class working men's hats so casually in a field? And most importantly, where are the heads they once sat upon?
A voice over, (non diagetic sounds) of a British man then overlays a gentle howl of wind, giving the audience simple instructions, to 'watch closely.' This immediately engages the viewer with the film.
There is then a very quick shot change, and as the audience is doing as the voice told, gives the audience a quick jolt of shock, following the typical conventions of a thriller, by adding a thrill.
This then stops and we are taking to cage full of little innocent birds that are sweetly tweeting the day away. The lighting is bright and seems very inappropriate for the genre of the film.
The bird sound is then added to with the voice over continuing to explain about how to create a magic trick. This is very skillfully done as the although magic tricks and birds all seem very innocent and child like, the mans voice seems unsettled and worried about something, therefore creating a contrapuntal sound. Once again spinning enigmas into the very deep and complex web of the thrillers story line. Which again  follows the conventions.
The viewer is then taken to yet another surrounding, this scene again does not seem any thing out of the ordinary. The camera angle is a simple mid shot, head on, with what we can only imagine as the magician, in the center. However as we have already seen the hats lying on the ground it makes us very weary of every one. In addition the scene is very dark and thus has connotations of a very sinister atmosphere.
We are then told that most magic tricks are fake and are exactly what they say they are. Tricks.
The man that we first assume is just a random member of the public soon becomes a con artist and is in fact part of the production, adding to the suspicious nature that the film has given to the audience.
Whilst this is going on there are quick changes of shots from the stage trick to cute bird trick with old gentle looking man, showing both ends of the spectrum.
Once the old man has made the bird disappear, the man on the stage looks to be electrocuted and is also made to disappear creating a parallel with the other more calm environment. However unlike the bird which is somehow placed back into the hand of the old man, the performer is plunged into water, which is then locked (this s shown in a close up shot ensuring the viewer knows this is the end of his life, adding to tension.
A man is then shown simply watching the other one panic and slowly die in pain. This again makes the viewer feel uneasy as in this day in age this would be classed as inhumane.
So in the opening alone we told that there has been a large mass killing/kidnap resulting in the loss of the men’s tops hats that could have happened in the past or will happen in the further of the film. That magic is inevitably part of the story, there has been either an accidental or intended death of a man and that the old man may not be as innocent as we would have first thought as he is willing to put the secrecy of tricks before the justice of a dead man.
Along side these assumptions the audience have made there are still many more questions that they hope will be answered in the course of the film.

Production Logo Ideas

In our group we all designed a logo which we thought would look good for the Production Company we have created. The first is Charlie's logo, the second is Chloe's logo and thirdly is Billy's.
We think at the moment that Billy's will be most appropriate as Charlie's connotes horror and Chloe's is more juvenile.

The Divide - opening scene (Sarah Gilchrist)

It starts of with a close up of a girl's eyes crying, the shot does not tell us much about this character other than her emotions. In her eyes you see a reflection of a city being bombed, this shows the audience that there might be a link to her tears and the destruction of the city - it also leads the audience to many questions about why the city is being destroyed and what the girl's character has to do with the story. the second shot is of her blank facial expression and the reflection of the city, the shot is very abstract and strange which portrays the genre of thriller.

The editing contrasts, it begins with very long shots to show the characters sad emotions and then quick sharp edits to show the chaos and desperation the characters are feeling as the run to escape the demolishing building falling above their heads. A transition is used very effectively, where the shot turns black from the top, which looks almost like a point of view shot as if we were seeing it from someone in the films eyes and that character were shutting there eyes.

This action scene is totally chaotic and panicked, the characters are scrambling for their lives and still it remains a mystery to how this war was caused. At the end of the first scene the shot go back and forth from the people left outside this safe room running in desperation to get inside, and a man closing the door as the walls around him crumble. and the between the shots it fades to black, which makes the scene very dramatic and effective. There's one shot were it goes head first down the center of the stairs, which adds to the fear and gives a clear view of the people there struggling to escape. There's a close up shot focused on a man who's looking up and as an audience we know that this shows that he is looking straight at danger.

the mise en scene used is also very useful as the lighting and the crumbling walls around them adds to the chaos in this scene. the lights flash on and off, which appears almost as if as an audience we are in the scene and were blacking in and out of whats happening.

Opening to a Thriller Movie -'The departed opening' -By Billy Stocker

The film starts of with opening titles and then goes onto clips of fights around Boston, USA, from the past, Which have diegetic sound along with them, but there is also a non-diagetic voice over of a man telling the viewer information from the past! Then there is a man smoking, but you cant really see what he looks like other than a manly dark figure, the viewer is automatically led to believe the man in the shot is the man who does the voice over, which he is still talking in this clip. After the clip, non diegetic music begins to play and the voice over has finished. Then there is clip of a shop/cafe on a street, the camera then tracks into the building and then the man who was the dark silhouette walks in, he also speaks with the same voice from the voice over, but you cant really see him very well because of the dark light on him, so you can't see his features, which make it very mysterious. He then talks to the man over the counter and the women, he then buys ideas for the young boy to his right.

The cinematography has been used very well because the low lighting on the man leaves a black silhouette and leaves the audience curious to who he is! There is also a tracking shot into the building, which I think must of been a crane shot because it flows into the building from above. There is also a use of close up, like for example the money, which leaves you wondering what the moneys is for if the shop work is handing it over!

The mise en scene has been used very well by telling the audience the time setting and location of this opening. The costumes, settings and props tell us that it could be set in the time period of the 1960's in a city in America (Boston, USA).

There wasn't any noticeable effects used in this opening, this may be to create a realistic feel and to make it more raw!

R1 - 16 2011 Analysis

We feel this thriller opening was not the best it could have been. Many of the enigmas asked were soon after answered thus ruining the whole idea of the film.
The shots were amature and set up and the viewer was able to see very easily what was going to happen, for example before the girls enter the graveyard they say 'let's go to the graveyard.' This need not have been annouced.
However before the girls come into the frame we see a shot of the ground, this is relativly effective as it quite blurred and it makes the viewer strain to see what the image is. There is also a scene in the grave yard where the girls seem to be disappearing/ fading away and blurring. This is quite effective, and alone could have been evoking enough to create the entire opeing, without the other elements.

The girl shown sleeping restlessly is quite a good shot, especially with the chaning light, although doesn't really fit in with this opening as the 'it was all a dream' sort of set up is really not complex enough for this sort of film.

analysis of T1-22 students thriller

This Thriller covered all the criteria need, but it wasn't excellent it some areas. The area which stopped it reaching higher marks were the subtitles because they were very plain and didn't really fit into the film.
The editing was really good and it was like a montage of shots, but all the shot were relevant and they fitted into the opening of the film leaving an enigma. Although they didn't use a big variety of shots, the close us/extreme close up shots are very relevant to the genre as it doesn't show the whole of the subject so the audience doesn't see everything. They give shots that give the audience an idea of the film but let them make up there own idea of the plot. The shots were unclear, which place idea into the audiences head. The sound is very effective as it is distorted and you can really work the sound out, its contrapuntal sound. Its not really music but works even more effectively as the sound track, as the audience have to interpret the noises which makes it more enigmatic.

Hanna Opening Sequence

Within the opening thriller sequence of Hanna it allows the viewer to know crucial information. From the very start we are shown the land in which they live is very isolated this is shown in a long shot. This isolation is enhanced by the ice and snow and again the showing that not only are they all alone but there life is extremely harsh and far more intense than necessary. This is all shown in the mise en scene. In the next scene we are shown a young girl, this seems a very inappropriate surrounding for a girl of this age however she then shoots a deer showing, like many thrillers, that it is not what the eye would first imagine.
The cut off nature of this very serial and Narnia inspired land is highlighted further by the lack on diegetic sound and thus sound in general, until the breathing a deer begins. This makes the audience feel very uneasy due to the intensity of this singled and amplified sound.
A girl than comes into the frame right in the centre this alerts the audience that this character will be throughout and is of great importance in the story. This method is continued in the whole of the opening, this as well as telling the audince that she is important but is also very strong in the setting and is of dominance.
This is again shown by the mise en scene of her cosutme as she sounds out  in the fresh, vibrant white snow.
The girl and moose then interact when she shoots it, the editing then becomes far more accelerated adding to the tension that has already been building in the shots previously.
Next sound we hear after them running is the howl of pain from the moose this is again very unsettling for the audience as the general public would find that cruel and thus this film is challenging the audience it sit it through and watch the film.
Later on in the opening the girl then speaks an array languages this adds to ample amount of questions that have already been constructed, or example;
If she is

Caché Opening

Caché opens with a scene of a street, nothing seems abnormal. It then becomes clear that this is just a video (within the film) as we can see it being rewound on screen. The story is that a couple have received a videotape showing the outside of their house. The tape was left on their doorstep wrapped in a plastic supermarket bag. The couple are discussing how they could have missed the person filming the tape, as they are both shown leaving the house. They are befuddled as to the purpose of the video as nothing appears out of the ordinary. This also acts to make the audience feel unsettled, and as if they are being lulled into a false sense of security, because often in a typical thriller film, something is shown as wrong straight away. They wonder if the filmer could have been one of their son's friends or one of the man's fans. The questions constantly asked throughout is about the purpose and origin of the video.

All sound used is diegetic, being noises such as footsteps and cars, the usual sounds of the street. We also hear the couple speaking. There is no music which increases the sense of reality, also making the speech seem more significant and not distracting the audience from it.

mise En Scene
The costumes for this particualr thriller film is normal clothing, so again increasing the sense of normality. Looking at some of the props, you can tell that they are intellectual family, as there are many books in the background. You can also see that they are quite wealthy, from things such as a modern kitchen and a large television.

Thriller Conventions - Sarah Gilchrist

The director of the film Inception - Christopher Nolan - uses generic thriller conventions but makes the film a high bred of thriller and action. The story of the film centres around crime as the idea of inception is to get into someone's mind and steal information from their conscience which is illegal.

A large aspect of the film is action but the complex plot makes it a thriller. The film plays on the readers emotions, as audience experiences excitement, exhilaration and a sense of suspense.

The opening scene starts with clips of the end scene, one character's appearance isn't revealed and is portrayed as a villain. The audience is left with an enigma, a sense of mystery and unanswered questions come across through this opening scene which matches that of a conventional thriller.

The main character Cobb lost his wife (Mol) to suicide and his love for her is his one weakness as she appears throughout the inception process and makes his judgement and descisions harder to make. In the film she comes across as the antagonist and is constantly making their plan go wrong. Cobb puts himself in dangerous situations as his determination and bravery gets the better of him.

The city Cobb and Mol have created come across as dull and lifeless which emphasises that its not real.

The director uses close up's to create an intense emotional moment which creates suspension. Fragmented long shots are used to create a chaotic action scene. The fragmented shots together represent the state of mind they are in this quick thinking, quick acting mission. For example lots of point of veiw shots which show the character looking around quickly for danger.

The film has a theme of amnesia, and secrets. In the end scene Fishers son is completely unaware of any of the intense dramatic plot that was going on within his very own mind and they had the power to put an idea in his mind and make a decision for him and this shows the power of inception.

The sounds used in the film were mainly diagetic which made the film more realistic than a soundtrack as the audience can hear what the characters are hearing, and you engage with the characters. Sounds of gun shots, explosions and machinery where used to make you feel as if you were right there in the middle of all the action.

Thriller conventions - Billy Stocker

Inception is a science-fiction action film, It written and directed by Christopher Nolan. The film was released in 2010 by Warner Bros. I think it has used steriotypical conventions a lot thriller movies have.

The narrative centers around crime, Inception uses crime as the prime theme of the thriller by going into Fisher's son's mind to persuade him to give up the business and not follow his father. The idea of Inception is then used to plant an idea into his mind, this was done on a 10 hour flight to US and then was consummated, within this time period to change is mind. Inception is a thriller because there sudden rush of emotions, excitement, sense of suspense, apprehension, and exhilaration, which all drive the narrative, this is very stereotypical in most thriller films.

The protagonist (‘Cobb’) is fallible of his wife ‘Mol’ his dead wife but she is also antagonist, the villain of the film! This Makes the Protagonist weak and vulnerable, this creates Achilles heel and stops him doing his job properly because of his wife! Cobb originally made Mol the enemy by planting thoughts into her mind, resulting in her getting confused and killer her self by think she is still in a dream. So ‘Cobbs’ memories of her and the children distract him in his dreams!

In Inception the protagonist, was definitely seen in danger at many times during the film. Cobbs makes himself to be the quite vulnerable at points especially when Mol his wife makes an appearance. The places he created in his mind is so subversive and sometimes proves to be impossible and presents to us his fear and the danger which confines him. Cobbs takes risks to help people he is in the layers with, as well as covering his own back from approaching danger. This shown by different camera angles, like close ups to capture fear and emotions or to capture action by using long shots . In a certain scene where the protagonist is seen in peril is near the end of the film where he is sat in the house with Mol his wife and she is asking for him to stay and share a life with her in the subconscious world they created years ago, but she becomes apprehensive and stabs a kitchen knife to his body. He is was then hurt but had to find strength within his mind to work out that it isn't reality and he will be okay once he wakes up.

In Inception antagonist (Mol, Cobbs wife) is very controlling and powerful over Cobb's mind and thoughts and at some points blocks any other thoughts he may have, so that he cannot stop thinking about Mol and whether what he is doing is the right thing to do. Near the end she traps him in the world which they created together by using memories and ideas they shared, this makes him extremely vulnerable to Mol to enter his mind with thoughts of her. At the very start she was so preoccupied by this thought that she wasn't living in the real world and that she should take 'a leap of faith' to reality so they could be with their children is reality. She tried very hard to persuade Cobbs that what she was saying was true and that he should jump of the side of the building with her and they'd be able to live "happily ever after" and here it proved to take a lot for Cobb to know she wasn't right and not to listen to this complicated theory that she had thought up. When she did jumped of the side of the building and fell this left him feeling helpless and lonely in his world because he hadn't understood what she had been trying to explain about and this is then where the whole idea of inception occurred making him then live an isolated place within other people's subconsciousness minds!!

Most of the places in the narrative of Inceptions is created in the protagonist mind, In his mind he created cities, hall, buildings, landscapes and things from memory, but none of it was actually real! There was a group of people who joined the protagonist, to filter through the subconscious and to change what people thought by planting idea into people heads. They could change the way someone lived there life by attacking them in there head and forcing ideas into there mind, like they did with Fisher on the Flight to LA!!!

Sound
Most of the sound was mainly diegetic and either consisted of speech, gun shots, machinery, or the music which was played into the ears of the person to wake them up out of the subconscious. The sounds heard by the audience were all heard by the characters too, as they were mostly just the surrounding background sounds in characters environment. There wasn’t any non diegetic music or sounds used to create an atmosphere or certain mood. However the sounds of the gun shots and explosions may have been enhanced non diegetic sounds to create a more realistic sound and atmosphere.

Camera work
There was lots of long shot to capture the action to build up the suspense, like for example the shooting scenes and the floating down the corridor. Another camera work which helps build up suspense was Cobbs point of view when his wife was about to jump of the building! There was arrange of over shoulder shots with Mel and Cobbs when they were having a conversation.

Mise en scene
The character are dressed in clothes for the situation they are in, this acts to help them blend in and to wear clothes which are suitable for the situation, For example the ski clothes for when they went to that locations in the snow or when they were on the plane or when the were in the sea. All the clothes don’t look out place, therefore help them blend into there surroundings! The Guns, ski’s where used to back the genre of the thriller, whereas chairs, table and house hold objects etc.. were used to help create the scene.

editing
Editing was used to create suspense, for example explosions or when that massive storm cloud came when Cobb was in his subconscious to show fear of time running out or when the city was turned up side down, it all help to create an atmosphere for a good thriller. The storm clouds was created using CGI and some of the scenes like when the city turned upside down where done with a green screen. When of the character is floating down the corridor they used a rotational green screen to make it look like he was floating around!

There used all 3 key elements for this thriller, all to a certain degree throughout the film, but the main theme was most probably amnesia as at the end of the film we clearly see at the air port when Fisher's son sees Cob he doe not recognize him and remember the events which have just taken place in the layers of his subconscious mind. All of the work they do in the minds of these people is forgotten apart from the main objective which is to change the someones mind about something or make them want to do something. Although it proves that when Cobb meets Mol again it is clear that he can soon suffer amnesia about his task in hand and can soon slip away to forgetting she is dead and is only a created in his head.

Inception uses all these elements, which show all these themes. The main idea of this film is to enter someones mind and alter what they think by planting ideas into there subconscious. The images trick you into thinking everything is reality, but really its just a figure of your imagination!

At the very beginning of Inception Cobb lying is in the sea as if he had just been washed up there, this moment carried on to show him in a Japanese building showing him sat opposite end of the table to an man who had found him and was trying to get words from him to discover information about the spinning top Cobbs has. This moment then was carried on to create the rest of the film, but then at the very end, we only then find out how Cobb became to be washed up in the sea and went back to the same place!!!
which then resolved the film and the task they had been working to complete. This then put all the pieces together and then you work out the task and then inception is completed!!!!
